How to create an interactive product demo: the order
- Name one job: write the demo title as a task, such as approving an invoice, not as a product overview.
- Choose a format: screenshot and video for quick walkthroughs, HTML for sharp text and editable data, sandbox for free exploration.
- Capture and trim: record the job, then cut every step that does not advance it.
- Add one call to action: end with a single action, such as book a call or start a trial.
- Place a form only if you need one, and decide where.
- Embed it on the page that raises the question, then read step-level analytics and revise.
Before you record: pick one job and a format
Supademo's own playbook calls the kitchen-sink tour the most common mistake: viewers arrive with one question, so build one demo per job. If you must cover more, bundle several short demos into a collection so viewers choose their path.
Format follows the product. Supademo lists guided screenshot and video demos on every plan, guided HTML demos from Business and sandbox demos from Growth. The format decides the tier, so choose the format before you choose the plan.
Capture and edit: the steps to keep and the steps to cut
Open on the moment of value, not on a login, an empty state or a setup screen. Supademo's guide says most high-performing demos stay under 15 steps and that the first three steps decide whether a viewer finishes. Put any needed context in one short sentence, not three setup steps.
Use hotspots and callouts to mark the next click, blur sensitive data before you share, and add a voiceover or captions so the demo works with sound on or off. These are the vendor's recommendations, labeled as such.
Place the lead form deliberately
Where you ask for details is a conversion choice. Supademo advises a form up front when the demo is the offer, a form after three to five value-showing steps for warmer leads, and no form in docs, support or in-app demos. Keep forms short, because every extra field costs completions.
Supademo's form chapter allows up to seven fields and can limit entries to business email addresses. The docs list it from the Scale plan up, so check your tier before you plan the gate.
Embed it where the question is asked
- Copy the embed code from the share menu and paste it unmodified into an HTML block; the Supademo docs say edited snippets and iframe-stripping content blocks are the usual reasons an embed shows blank.
- Give the frame a short, descriptive title. MDN explains that screen reader users rely on the iframe title to know what the frame holds, and that without it they must enter the frame to find out.
- Prefer lazy loading for demos below the fold. MDN notes that loading="lazy" defers an iframe until it nears the viewport, and Supademo says its own embed already loads when a visitor scrolls near it.
- Match the placement to the question: inline on the feature page, a button that opens the demo on secondary pages, or inside the help article that raises the doubt.
Test and measure: read where viewers leave
- Completion: a demo that few viewers finish is usually too long, so cut steps.
- Step drop-off: a sharp cliff at one step marks a confusing screen; simplify it or write a clearer callout.
- Source: UTM-tagged links show which channel sends viewers who finish.
- Cadence: review weekly at first, and re-record a shrinking section rather than patching it. The Supademo review lists which plans carry analytics, and the best interactive demo software guide compares other tools.
